The 1794-IP4 is an electronic module that belongs to the Flex IO product family. This module is capable of high-speed counting typically used for receiving flowmeter totalizer pulses, data loggers, production counters and other systems.

If features a built-in Four (4) pulse transmitters, each pulse transmitter having a dedicated pair of optocoupled inputs. These inputs have Positive (+) and Negative (-) sign for connection to signal sources with complementary and non-complementary signals. This module also has Two (2) 16-bit Up/Down counters per channel. The 4 interface may be configured for period time measurement, utilizing One (1) 16-bit counter or a 32-bit counter.

The 1794-IP4’s applicable pulse frequency is up to 100KHz. It is capable of accepting and returning Binary data. This module utilizes Block Transfer Read (BTR) and Block Transfer Write (BTW) instruction to exchange data to and from the controller. There are Two (2) clock frequencies that can be selected for use with the module, Clock frequency 1 equivalent to 10MHz and Clock Frequency to equivalent to 1 MHz. Clock frequency is important in period time measurement. 10 MHz clock is recommended for 32-bit while 1 MHz clock is recommended for 16-Bit.

High-speed counters offer high accuracy counting due to the fact that it has selectable frequency range to fact the incoming signal’s frequency. When used a totalizer to interface with pulse generating devices, ensure that the field device frequency is properly set. If used as encoder interface, the resolution must be in accordance to the encoder’s resolution to be able to measure the correct position. For data loggers, some accepts analog signals as reference for the data logger to compute a totalized value.
